How to set watch winder for Seiko

Apr 11, 2021

When selecting a watch winder that is suitable for your Seiko watch things are made really quite simple as the majority of their current models fit within the standard winding specifications shared by the vast majority of all automatic watches on sale today. If you want to learn some of the basics our guide to selecting a watch winder would be the perfect place to go.

A Seiko watch typically needs around 650 TPD (turns per day) in order to remain 100% wound for the day. A standard setting for a watch winder is considered to be around 750 TPD as this is generally what most modern watches require. The fact that this is a little higher than the Seiko needs won’t create any detrimental issue, so there’s no real concern here.

It’s really easy to wind a Seiko incorrectly if the watch winder hasn’t been set properly but if you manually wind the watch first and then put it into the winder, it will work out just fine – as your initial manual wind diminishes, the winder will take over to get it back to where it needs to be.

The majority of Seiko watches require 650 TPD and need to be wound bi-directionally, here are a few of the most popular Seiko models and their winding specifications:

If you could not find your watch model (or caliber) in this table, you may determine your Seiko winding mode on a trial basis. You should select the combined winding mode (CW+CCW) and the minimal number of turns per day (TPD). Then place your watch into the watch winder box and check after a few days how accurate your watch shows the time. If it runs behind, it is necessary to increase the number of TPD by one step.
